Hezbollah, the radical Shiite organization influenced by Iran, initiated the modern era of Islamic suicide terrorism against Israeli and multinational forces in Lebanon in the early 1980s. Sunni jihadists from Hamas and Al Qaeda were inspired by the attacks and were later trained by Hezbollah operatives. Despite being the originator of synchronized suicide bombings, Hezbollah has not performed a suicide attack since 1994, and Shiites have abstained from suicide attacks since 1996.
